Some commissions are an exercise in restraint. The client wanted a stone that would speak for itself, so the work went into the stone: a round brilliant chosen for its light return in daylight, not only its report.

The Jeweller

Joshua Vanderpool

Joshua entered the jewellery industry at sixteen and has spent more than eight years in it since, much of that within London’s Hatton Garden diamond district. He holds a Diamond Diploma and built his knowledge in the diamond wholesale trade, where sourcing, grading and selecting stones is the whole of the work.

That background is what clients come for: an eye for how a diamond will actually present, a network of suppliers and craftsmen built over years, and a way of working that is personal, discreet and unhurried.

Diamond expertise

Beyond thecertificate.

A grading report describes a diamond. It does not tell the entire story.

Joshua walks every client through what the paper cannot show, and why two stones with the same grade can look, and cost, very different. The aim is not to teach gemmology. It is to make sure the stone you choose is the right one.

Discuss Your Diamond

  1. 01

    Cut

The one grade that decides how a diamond handles light, and the one most often misread.

  2. 02

    Proportions

Two stones with the same grade can carry light very differently. The numbers behind the grade matter.

  3. 03

    Visual character

Bow-ties, windowing, brightness, the pattern of a cushion: things a report cannot show you.

  4. 04

    Fluorescence

Sometimes invisible, sometimes a flaw, sometimes an advantage. It depends on the stone.

  5. 05

    Certification

Which laboratories to trust, what a report guarantees, and what it quietly leaves out.

  6. 06

    Rarity

Why two apparently similar stones can sit a long way apart in the market.

  7. 07

    Value

Where the money in a diamond actually goes, and where it is well spent for the wearer.

  8. 08

    In person

How the stone presents on the hand, in daylight and in the evening. The only test that matters.

The commission

From conversationto presentation.

Every piece follows the same unhurried path. Most of it happens in conversation.

  1. 01

    Consultation

Understand the occasion, wearer, style, preferences and budget.

A private conversation, in person or by phone, with no obligation and nothing to buy.

  2. 02

    Stone Selection

Joshua sources a carefully selected shortlist of diamonds or gemstones.

Stones are viewed loose, in daylight and under grading light, with their reports to hand.

  3. 03

    Design

The proportions, setting and details are refined around the selected stone and wearer.

Drawings and renders are reviewed together until every line is right.

  4. 04

    Creation

Specialist craftsmen bring the commission to life.

Mounted, set and finished by hand by craftsmen Joshua has worked with for years.

  5. 05

    Presentation

The finished piece is privately presented to the client.

Checked against the brief and the stone report, then presented in person.
